Friction & Resistance are Just Two Kinds of Welding

You may think that there are actually only a couple of types of welding that are commonly used. There are though many different types of welding used by manufacturers in the making of machines, tools and products. Whilst the basic principles of welding are that pieces of material, usually metals or thermoplastics, are fused together through the use of heat and pressure, the methods used in the various types of welding are quite different.

We should take a closer look at two more common types of welding that are used every day in manufacturing - friction welding and resistance welding. Descriptions of each one are shown below:

In friction welding the heat is produced by moving or rotating one component against the other under compression. Friction welding comes in various forms. These include rotary friction welding - which may be inertia, direct-drive, or radial - friction stir welding and linear friction welding. With these friction welding processes no melting occurs.
